Strong Connections: A Key to Psychological Resilience
Strong Connections: A Key to Psychological Resilience
A great effort by the team—especially backing up so strongly after ANZAC Day, a time that reminds us of the enduring values of mateship, sacrifice, and resilience—during the Lead Emergency Teams (L.E.T) component on the training grounds. They demonstrated a high level of the HART skill set: High-Quality Connections, in action.
Over the last two HART Certifications for Rio Tinto's emergency response teams, we covered an often overlooked but essential skill: Strong Connections.
For those working in high-adversity roles—especially FIFO workers and emergency responders—nurturing relationships outside the job can be incredibly tough. Long swings, critical incidents, and the emotional toll of the work don’t just switch off at the end of a shift. That stress often follows workers home.
That’s why developing and protecting off-site connections is non-negotiable for long-term health and longevity. Whether it’s partners, kids, mates, or community—these relationships aren’t just nice to have. They are part of what keeps people grounded.
Being intentional in comings and goings makes a difference. A phone call before flying out. A meal shared on the first night back. Time set aside just to be present. These are small rituals that remind both the individual—and those who care about them—that they matter.
However, showing up physically isn’t enough. How someone shows up is just as important.
Setting clear boundaries that preserve recovery time and allow for reconnection is critical. Being open about needs, and ready to listen to others, supports deeper relationships. Another key strategy covered is Active Constructive Responding—the skill of engaging positively and meaningfully when someone shares something good. It strengthens connection, trust, and mutual respect.
Saving time and energy for the people that matter most is not just important—it’s essential.
What strategies are being used to protect and strengthen the connections that matter most—especially when working off-site?
