Building Trauma Resilience: Realistic Training for Emergency
Building Trauma Resilience: Realistic Training for Emergency
This week, during the HART Certification, I saw outstanding participation from all trainees, with strong engagement from Rio Tinto ESOs during the Level 5 training block at ERGT’s training facility.
In HART Certification, one of the key techniques for developing trauma resilience is pre-exposure—where realistic training plays a crucial role. While responding quickly is essential, preparing in advance builds resilience over time—helping the limbic brain become less reactive and allowing the prefrontal cortex to maintain control.
By gradually increasing intensity and complexity, we improve survival rates for emergency responders when they face real-life situations. Using trauma simulation aids, such as:
• Lifelike moulages with artificial blood
• Amputee arm task trainers
• Phlebotomy practice kits for IV injection training
These tools provide realism and pre-exposure to trauma, but we also consider other sensory elements—such as noise, controlled stress induced through physical activity before a specific exercise (e.g. performing burpees before CPR), and even odours—to enhance training effectiveness.
However, managing stress exposure is just as important! Introducing additional sensory aids must be accompanied by effective control measures and de-escalation strategies to prevent pushing team members too far. Knowing your team and recognising individual limits helps minimise psychological casualties in real emergencies. A well-structured support system ensures responders are not only prepared but also protected from long-term psychological strain—a key focus of HART training.
Looking Ahead.
As we continue to refine and enhance emergency response training, what strategies or tools have you found effective in building resilience among your teams?
How do you strike the right balance between realism and psychological safety in high-intensity training environments?
