Broken Hill mining company Perilya has confirmed that underground operations are still suspended at its southern mine site. 53 underground workers were evacuated after a fire broke out on level 24 of the mine on Sunday night. Broken Hill operations general manager Chris Chindanya says the mine's EMERGENCY RESCUE TEAM has accessed the source of smoke and heat and fully extinguished the source of the blaze using water and foam. He says encouraging results have been noted with a significant reduction in heat and gases measured. Mine management is continuing to work with the NSW Resources Regulator in assessing the level of residual risk and implement appropriate control measures to manage the smoke and heat.
