G’day David,
Firstly, 100% Bang on mate!
This goes in line with what Rescue Connect is all about: brining people together who want to share, learn and grow by making thoughts and ideas like this visible.
I couldn’t agree more with what your saying and it proves a few things:
1- We work in a more isolated domain as rescue workers within heavy industry. We’re quite often left alone, lack the extensive guidance and industry support that say a sate fire and rescue organisation has.
2- We lack oversight. Sure, there’s some people out there on boards and committees but, from my lived experience these are VERY old school and bureaucratic but also essential (can they be re-structure with greater member ‘buy-in’ over a newsletter and advice or a policy change?).
3- We’re beholden to each INDIVIDUAL Human Resource department within our own isolated company. These departments (in my view) have little to no understanding of what our role entails or, requires - and that snot their fault. With the example above with Fire and Rescue is they almost exclusively know the role of their members.
My offer: I’m currently working on an industry wide survey as part of what our mission (to connect the dots, share, learn and grow) is all about. As the founder of RC, all I am is a creator and traffic cop.
This community is OUR members offering their own thoughts in a supportive and constructive way to help each together. So let’s do something about it?
If we compile enough evidence a few things will happen (yeah, I’m crossing my fingers on this one):
1. RC will be seen for what it is and what it’s becoming = validity within our industry and will become more valuable and useful to its members (thanks to posts like yours!)
2. We can work together and collaborate on points like this to submit to any stakeholders, institutions, MP’s, industry bodies and so on and show them we want a higher level of performance and care.
3. We can create our own independent groups (anytime) within the platform as a true resource to look after our people with the right people chairing and steering it who have the knowledge and experience to do so.
Lastly, I’ve very intentionally made our terms and conditions such that, this will never turn into ‘just another facebook group’ or, LinkedIn where it’s all about self promotion (in my view)… We’ve got something deep and special I’ve spent years building for our people and if you think we need another group, section or capability please let me know and lets make it happen!
I hope my comment is useful mate, I’m here to collaborate.
Ohh yeah… don’t forget you can add hashtags and then search for posts like this. I’ll kick this one off #industryassociaiton
