G’day Ryan!
We’ve heard similar questions before so you’re not alone!
Some suggestions:
- ROCK DRILLS (this is where you overview a response to a job or incident using the team to walk through the process and cover the individual roles, responsibilities, tasks, communications etc. that are required. It can be done on a whiteboard, using rocks / models, walking off the appliance and using the ‘pause’ ‘play’ training methodology to give your team a low and slow appreciation for that more rapid sequence that’s required when its all go, go, go).
- HOBO Fire Ground (utilising start piquets and hessian cloth, or similar, you can make a basic structure at speed if nothing else is available onsite to get entry drills better. The benefit is you can construct and pack it up rapidly).
- KIMS Games (Keep In Memory System, is a game where you place items on the ground, say 15 small items and your team walk into the room, you remove the cover or similar and they have 60 seconds to try and remember all the items. It has been shown to increase memory retention and is used in the military and other rescue organisations often. Plus it’s great for team work).
- RADIO DRILLS (using a video on YouTube of a related incident, mute the sound and have your students / crew actively narrate the situation as though they are talking on a radio. This helps them get comfortable with scene command and even if this isn’t their individual role it will help them to respect and appreciate good radio communications as well as work on their ability to effectively talk on a radio).
- PRE INCIDENT PLANS (commonly done by fire rescue organisations. A Pre-Incident Plan is where you take the crew to a work area and essentially do a walk around identifying: location, type of construction, hazards, firefighting aids such as hydrants, access, restrictions, worker / occupant capacity, assembly / evacuation points, flammability and so on. The best this about this is its a great way to understanding the workplace better and if you use a good template, it can be logged as part of your KPI risk assessment for the workplace).
We have HEAPS MORE but hopefully that’s a start for you legend!
