Bit of a different challenge from the other night.
We've seemed to get nothing but storms this summer here in Canberra and yet another cell moved through. Although not the combat agency, myself and other ACT RFS Volunteers were paged to assist our ACTSES and ACTFR colleagues in their response.
What was meant to be a nice evening of chatting with mates and swinging a chainsaw was changed when I was redirected to join the IMT as the "RFS" Sector Leader (or Operations Officer by another name). At the time I stepped into the role I took responsibility for ~20 assets and >50 members. We had more than 200 jobs outstanding. Especially grateful for the super professional and skilled ACTFR CAD Operator/Dispatcher who managed both the board and someone showing up who also needed a lot of help! 😂
I had plenty of lessons learned over this period, as being part of managing a scale response like this to a storm event is a completely new challenge. As I said to the IC at one point... just give me a fire to run next time, at least I know what it's doing!
The inter-agency work was particularly great. At all levels teams brought their specialised equipment and skillset and worked alongside each other independent of the badge on their shoulder.
